The Newton MessagePad was made fun of on The Simpson’s in the episode “ Lisa on Ice.” There was also a very limited amount of user space. In order to get other apps, the user had to connect the MessagePad to their Mac. Still, Apple’s new handheld device garnered a fair amount of press. There was no App store then, so the MessagePad shipped with basic productivity apps. The Newton MessagePad launch at the 1993 Macworld Expo proved relatively low-key compared to the 1984 debut of the Macintosh. The $699 starting price was way too high for a product that felt like a Beta product. It didn’t live up to expectations and didn’t live up to Apple’s reputation to deliver high-quality products. Some electronic engineering and the manufacture of Apples MessagePad devices was undertaken in Japan by Sharp. Well, for one thing, the Newton MessagePad’s handwriting recognition software was just awful. The Apple Newton MessagePad 130, codenamed Dante, features a 20 MHz ARM 610 processor, 8 MB of ROM, 2.5 MB of RAM (1,199k of system RAM, 1,361k of Flash RAM for internal storage), and infrared-beaming capabilities in a sleek handheld case with a 320x240 pressure-sensitive, backlit monochrome display for use with a provided stylus. It had 640KB of RAM, and a 1-bit, 336-by-240-pixel LCD. According to MacWorld, the original Newton MessagePad was a one pound, 7.25-by-4.50-by-0.75-inch device with a 32-bit ARM 610 CPU running at 20MHz. It was really the first PDA - long before Palm devices, long before the Pocket PC, and way long before the iPhone.Īs Time notes, the MessagePad received generally good reviews when finally arriving in stores on August 2, 1993.
